ICOM IC-A24 NAV/COM

The IC-A24/A6 has a completely renewed style with a large LCD and speaker. It offers simple operation by way of a minimum of practical functions. With its stylish design and reliable performance, the IC-A24/A6 series is a fitting successor to the award winning IC-A23 / IC-A5.

FEATURES:

  • Durable, stylish, and compact body (5-3/32 x 2-1/8 x 1-13/32 in.  15.2 oz.)
  • New channel recall function
  • Simultaneous operating and charging from external power source
  • VOR navigation function (IC-A24 only)
  • Dedicated 121.5MHz Emergency key (Programmed with 121.5MHz homing frequency)
  • Water resistant, equivalent to IPX4
  • 200 alphanumeric memory channels with memory banks
  • Side Tone function

Easy to use while flying
Simple one-handed operation is the most essential feature of the IC-A24/A6. The well labeled, large keypad provides user friendly operation. The large display shows both letters and numbers and is easy to see, making for fast frequency recognition. The display is back lit, and so is the keypad. The light stays on until you turn it off- a very handy feature for flying at night. On the side of the radio, it has a non-slip slit to prevent accidental dropping.

"Flip-flop Plus" channel recall
The IC-A24/A6 stores the last 10 channels used. You can easily recall those channels by pushing the "flip-flop" recall buttons on the front panel. It is convenient for switching between several channels, such as NAV and COM channels.

VOR navigation
The IC-A24 has VOR navigation functions. The DVOR mode shows the radial to or from a VOR station and the CDI mode shows the course deviation to/from a VOR station. You can also input your interested radial to/from the VOR station and show the course deviation on the display. In the USA version, the duplex operation allows you to call a COM channel, while you are using the VOR navigation. (IC-A24 only).

External DC power jack
An external DC power jack allows for operation with the included wall charger, BC-110 or the cigarette lighter cable, CP-20. When the battery pack is installed, simultaneous charging during operation is also possible. In addition, an optional battery case, BP-208N is available.

Water resistant construction
The water resistant construction provides reliable operation in wet conditions. Equivalent to IPX4 (IEC Standard Publication 529 IPX4 - protection against water splashed from any direction).

Large Alphanumeric LCD:
For the function display, a 6-character 14-segment alphanumeric LCD is employed to make a variety of information visually recognizable immediately. An automatic LCD backlight is standard for night time operation. Channel recall function: New for the IC-A24/A6, this function automatically memorized the last 10 used channels. You can easily recall those channels by pushing the recall buttons on the front panel. It is very convenient for switching between several channels at a time, such as NAV channels and COM channels etc.

Dedicated 121.5MHz Emergency Key:
A dedicated red emergency key programmed with a 121.5MHz homing frequency is equipped to give you extra confidence in the event of an emergency.

Large 200 Memory Channel Capacity With Memory Banks:
A total of 200 memory channels can be named with a 6-character channel name for easy recognition. By grouping these channels into 10 memory banks, quick and easy operation is possible.

Side Tone Function:
The side tone function allows you to hear your own voice via a headset. By monitoring you own voice, this function eliminates unnecessary shouting on a noisy runway. Side tone level is adjustable from the transceiver. (Headset Adapter Cable and external aviation headset are required.)

Variety Of Scanning Functions:
The COM band scan checks all of the busy COM band channels, and the memory scan checks the tagged memory channels. Weather channel scan is also possible.

Other Functions:

  • NOAA Weather Channels
  • 5W (PEP) Output Power
  • Low Battery Indication & Over Voltage Alert
  • BNC Type Antenna Connector
  • Keypad Backlighting
  • ANL (Auto Noise Limiter) reduces noise components

I compared my IC-A24 to a Vertex VXA-300 Pilot III and the Vertex was much better at picking up signals than the A24. The Vertex could grab VOR signals that the A24 could not pick up. While the A24 had better button positions and a BNC antenna connector, signal strength is most important, so this one gets a thumbs down for me. The A24 seemed to sensitive to antenna direction and interfearing conductors compared to the Vertex.
